And staying with an Olympic theme - Beijing will need to accommodate millions of visitors from home and abroad during the Games next August and the massive market is luring new hotel operators to set up in the capital. Amongst these, Budget hotel chains, are rapidly extending their networks to ensure a share of the action.

"Budget hotels ensure that travellers get their basic needs, and sometimes, a bit more, for instance, 24 hour hot water, air conditioning, double beds, etc."

The budget hotel Home Inn has the largest number of outlets in Beijing. It opened 18 premises this year alone to meet the demand of the coming Olympics.

"We hope to open 60 outlets by the end of 2008. We are speeding up."

Sun Yiqing takes charge of the hotel's operations in the north.

"We will soon kick start a service training program, and change our breakfast menu, and we are working on other details, such as prolonging restaurant opening times during the Game."

Home Inn is among a number of budget hotels hotting up their presence. Shanghai based Jinjiang Inn aims to open up to 50 outlets in Beijing by the end of this year. Foreign names including Super 8 are also catching up.

An agreement with the Olympic Organizing Committee requires the city to have 130,000 hotel rooms ready for guests during the Games, but there is a gap to fill.

Michael M. Isakson is the chairman of the International Franchise Association.

"From now on to the day when the Olympic Games start, we still need over 10,000 rooms. Budget hotels, with a small investment, are a good option to fill it."

When the concept of budget hotels was first introduced to China around 2000, it was something new, but it has become a top choice for a lot of business people.

Li Dongming is an architect from Hong Kong who has to spend almost half the year away on business trips. This time, he's been staying at a Home Inn for over a month.

"First of all, it is cheap, second, they have a lot of chain stores, it's convenient for me to find one. I think even if I come to the city for personal reasons, I will still choose this hotel."

Loyal customers like him are targeted by all budget hotels, who set up customer clubs and offer frequent discounts to attract new comers.

Sun Yiqing from Home Inn says the Olympic Games next year will be a good promotional time for them, and budget hotels won't just stop there, after all, hotels are a long-term investment.
