Net news to get a boost

China is poised to spend more on Internet news publishing and beef up its online industry to serve a rapidly growing number of Web readers, a leading Communist Party of China (CPC) official said Wednesday.

The Internet offers unprecedented opportunities with the country's online population exceeding 162 million and more youngsters inclined to get information from a wide variety of sources, Liu Yunshan, a member of CPC Central Committee's Political Bureau, said.

"Net news organizations need to ride the wave of advanced technology, be it broadband web publication, mobile terminal viewing or a method of communication still in the working," he said.

He urged official news websites to improve management and become market-oriented.

Liu's remarks came at a gathering of senior government officials in Beijing to celebrate the 10th anniversary of xinhuanet.com, one of China's leading news portals, which is affiliated to Xinhua News Agency.

Xinhuanet publishes an average of 12,000 news articles and other information a day, and its readers are based in more than 200 countries and regions. It has become a window for netizens both at home and abroad who want to learn more about China.
