PTA (Pure Terephthalic Acid) Market Report, 2007-2008

In 2004, China's output of PTA reached 4.835 million tons. With the entry of private enterprises and foreign capital, PTA output expands rapidly. In 2005, the output was up to 5.895 million tons (the actual production capacity reached 6.035 million tons), leaving South Korea (5.76 million tons), Chinese Taiwan (4.94 million tons) and America behind. China's output of PTA only took a share of 20% in Asia in 2005, 25% in 2006, and the figure will be up to one-third (over 10 million tons) in 2007.

PTA supply in China is mainly from imports, private enterprises and Sinopec Group, and they accounted for 53%, 22% and 22% respectively in 2005. CNPC only took 3%. Yet, private enterprises and joint ventures will play a more important role in the future.

In 2005, PTA demand in China arrived at 12.14 million tons, taking 42% of the world's total demand (28.8 million tons). PTA output got to 5.65 million tons and, imports 6.495 million tons. The degree of dependence on imports was 54%. The demand still keeps growing, and the demand & supply of PTA will be hardly balanced in the next few years. Moreover, EG demand amounted to 5.102 million tons, a share of 45% of global demand. And EG output reached 1.1 million tons and four million tons were imported. The degree of dependence on imports was 80%.

In recent years, the annual increased consumption is between 1.3 million tons and 2 million tons. This led to the ever climbing prices in Asian markets. As of 2005, PTA consumption in China took one-third of global PTA consumption and 50% of total consumption in Asia. The net increase of PTA apparent consumption in 2001-2005 got to 6.67 million tons with an average growth rate of 22.05%. The added output was up to 2.3 million tons with an average annual growth rate of 24.47%. And the imported volume rose from 3.11 million tons in 2001 to 6.49 million tons in 2005 with an average growth rate of 20.12%.

95.6% of imported PTA in China is mainly from Asian Regions and, 4% is from North America and Europe. In Jan-Aug, 2006, China's import of terephthalic acid reached 4.86 million tons (up by 12.8% year-on-year) valued by USD 4.13 billion (a year-on-year rise of 20.4%).
