* Data-intensive report with over 40 tables and charts

* Nearly 60 pages of research content

This report describes and analyses in detail the current situation about 252 new handset screens for this first half year and provides the prediction of development trends for the second half year. Specifically, it includes the screen mode (such as CSTN-LCD, TFT-LCD, UFB, OLED, TFD, monochromatic STN-LCD, color depth, resolution, diagonal distance, providers for of main displays, as well as screen mode, color depth, resolution, diagonal distance, provider for minor displays.

For the first half of 2004, there are totally 128 new handset models of foreign brands such as Motorola, Nokia, Samsung electronics, SonyEricsson, Siemens, Philips, Alcatel, Mitsubish, Soyea, Panasonic, Sanyo, LGE, NEC.Chabridge and 124 new handset models of domestic brands such as Bird, TCL, Amoi, Konka, Soutec, Panda, Kejian,Capitel, ZTE , lenovo, Haier, Eastcom, DBTEL.. In total, there are 252 new handsets.

For the handsets introduced in 2004, the handsets with color displays are the mainstay, as only one model with monochromatic display out of 252 new handset models. For the color displays, TFT-LCD is the mainstay accounting for 50%, while CSTN-LCD accounting for 41.2% and others for 8.4%.

The main CSTN-LCD vandors center on Taiwan, with sufficient supplies, usable potentials and rapid upgradeable throughput. Wintek Corporation, which ranks the top one in terms of throughput, has not made the use of above 60% of the throughput of CSTN-LCD.

The main TFT-LCD venders center on Japan, PMDS is the abbreviation of Philips MDS whose TFT-LCD panel production line lies in Kobe Japan, TFS is the abbreviation of an American company's name of Three-Five Systems whose production is lower. Korean vendors mainly are the indigenous handsets manufacturers and the handsets that are produced in Korea and sold with Chinese brands have decreased a lot.

Toppolyhas been losing money due to the pass rate for quality and would lose more if more production. It is predicted that the pass rate can be increased and strict the balance between losses and benefits by the early in 2005. UA, on the one hand, provides the supply to its established client BENQ, and BENQ's outsourcing partner Motorola also places orders to UA through BENQ; On the other hand, UA is the top one vendor for Digital Camera Display. Both Samsung and LG plan to outsource the production of digital camera to the manufactures in Taiwan for this second half year, and the digital camera shipments from UA may possibly increase, in addition, the order from Motorola is big in terms of quantity, therefore, the supplies to the outside will inevitably decrease. The Japanese vendors generally are conservative and very cautious of increasing the throughput.

Most of the display providers for mainland handset manufacturers are from Taiwan and Korea, with few of them from Japan. Thanks for the large supply for CSTN-LCD, the handset prices tend to decrease as a whole, while the supply for TFT-LCD will remain as before, thus, the market share of CSTN-LCD will inevitably increase. However, the trend is towards equipping with TFT-LCD and the increasing space for CSTN-LCD is limited while the decreasing space for TFT-LCD is limited too. Moreover, the supplies for TFD and UFB are sufficient, and the performance of TFD is higher in general, especially the suitability for smartphone, in spite of slightly high price, and it is predicted that its market share will increase. Although the price is lower, the market share for UFB will slightly decrease in the future due to its poor contrast.

There are 143 handset models with double displays design out of 252 new handset models, accounting for 56.7%. Instead, the various screen modes for sub-screen are in large number, with the top three as follows in terms of market share: monochromatic STN-LCD, 65536-color CSTN-LCD and OLED. OLED is the most reasonable sub-screen screen mode with high brightness, thin body, and energy saving compared with TFT-LCD, but its shipment had decreased for the first half year because of insufficient supply of Drive IC, which i s expected to ease up somehow for this second year. The shipment of OLED from Taiwan's Opto Tech has also been increasing at a relatively high speed, and Opto Tech may lower the price in favor of competing with RiT display, therefore, the OLED market will be further spurred with the expected increase of OLED market share. The conditions for 256-color and 4096-color are far poor than what it is for 65536-color, as their prices are higher than monochromatic and their positions are confused and their market share will gradually decrease. The supply for TFT-LCD is relatively stable, while the supply for CSTN-LCD is increasing with the price decreasing. It is predicted that the market share of TFT-LCD will decrease too.

The prices of 252 new handsets range around RMB 1000-3000, where 1000-2000 goes to 42.90% of the handset, and 2000-3000 goes to 28.30% of the handsets, with the rest segments of the range as follows respectively: 3000-4000, above 6000, 4000-5000, below 1000, 5000-6000.
