The French engineering group Alstom SA has won an order to supply 1,500 freight locomotives to China's Railway Ministry.

The deal is worth at least US$4.75 billion, based on an earlier contract signed in October that valued 500 freight locomotives at 1.2 billion euros (US$1.58 billion).

The contract is meant to support plans to expand and raise the speeds of China's railways.
