Work to upgrade the Xining-Golmud section of the Qinghai-Tibet railway began on Thursday, according to the Ministry of Railways.

The project involves the completion of a second rail line between Xining, capital of northwest China's Qinghai Province, and Golmud, another major city in the province, and electrifying the whole 834-km-long section.

Four hundred and seventy-four kilometers of the second rail link has already been built.

It will take five years to complete the project, which will allow the section to be able to accommodate 50 million tons of cargo annually and enable passenger trains to achieve a speed of 160 kilometers per hour.

The 1,956-km Qinghai-Tibet railway went into operation on July 1, 2006.

The Xining-Golmud section, badly in need of modernization, was completed in 1979 and began operation in May, 1984.
