German auto giant Volkswagen announced Thursday its sales in China hit a record high of 910,491vehicles in 2007.

The figure, which ensured China surpassed Germany as having the most Volkswagen consumers, was 28 percent higher than that of the previous year, the company said.

"We aim to sell one million vehicles in China in 2008," said VWChina president Winfried Vahland.

The company, which has a 18-percent share in China's auto market, will shoulder more responsibilities and obligations for the sustainable development of China's economy and society, said Vahland.

The automaker has promised the Chinese government that all the major models produced by its two joint ventures, Shanghai VW and FAW-VW, will reduce their oil consumptions and emissions by at least 20 percent by the end of 2010, Vahland said.
