CHINA is likely to increase its contribution from nuclear power to 5 percent of its total installed generating capacity by 2020, Zhang Guobao, head of the National Energy Administration, was quoted as saying yesterday by the China Securities Journal.

The revised share target was 1 percentage point higher than the goal set in the 2007 edition of the nation's nuclear power development plan. "The target adjustment will further improve the energy structure of the country and significantly reduce its reliance on coal," Gao Shixian, head of the research institute of energy under the National Development and Reform Commission, was quoted by the newspaper as saying last Friday.
