Tech Data Corp. said that it has begun marketing Lenovo’s ThinkPad Tablet, based on Google Inc.’s Android operating system, to its base of some 60,000 resellers.

Lenovo began offering the ThinkPad Tablet, which the vendor is positioning as “business friendly,” for sale in late August through resellers and online. A 16G-byte model carries a list price of about $500, officials said.

Tech Data said that it also will offer peripherals and services for the ThinkPad Tablet. The distributor said that it will dedicate a team of product managers, product sales champions and system engineers to support the platform to channel partners. In addition, it will offer peripherals and services for the system and special financing through its financial services arm.

“The ThinkPad Tablet helps business end-users work productively and securely, while also offering outstanding entertainment features and manageability,” said Tiffany Severance, Tech Data client systems product marketing director.

The ThinkPad Tablets are equipped with a mini-HDMI to connect external displays, an optional keyboard folio case with optical TrackPoint, a full-sized USB port and a full-size SD card slot, the company said.

Users also can access some 250,000 applications available at the Android Market web site and the Lenovo App Shop.

Sammy Kinlaw, Lenovo director, distribution sales, North America, said that “bringing the ThinkPad Tablet to Tech Data’s community of resellers will help give their business customers an extremely mobile technology tool that keeps them productive, while taking into account the security and manageability that businesses need.”

Jay Nilson, Softmart Inc. president and chief executive, said that “with Tech Data’s dedicated Lenovo team, I feel very confident in promoting the new Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet to our customer base.”

Lenovo said that Seton Hall University, a South Orange, NJ-based institution of some 10,000 students, already has deployed the tablet to 350 undergraduates.
