Research on Intelligent Driving SoCs: Competition Focus Shifts to L3/L4 Embedded Hardware, and Computing Power of Flagship Vehicle Models Exceeds 1,000 TOPS

In terms of intelligent driving system installation, mid-level intelligent driving systems (L2+L2.5) have gradually become standard configurations, with the penetration rate rising from 42.42% in 2023 to 50.89% in 2025. Driven by automakers such as BYD and Geely, L2.5 (highway NOA) has achieved remarkable incremental growth. The penetration rate of high-level intelligent driving systems (L2.9+L3, including embedded hardware) climbed from 2.18% in 2023 to 14.94% in 2025, and further increased to 21.3% from January to May 2026. Chinese OEMs are rapidly promoting mass production and installation of L3 intelligent driving systems in the form of embedded hardware.    

The introduction of national standards for L3/L4 intelligent driving systems pushes OEMs to accelerate deployment of high-level intelligent driving. 

The GB/T 44721-2026 Intelligent and Connected Vehicle - Safety Requirements for Automated Driving System, China’s first mandatory national standard targeting L3/L4 automated driving systems, was officially issued on July 30, 2026, and is scheduled to take effect on July 1, 2027. This standard requires vehicle manufacturers to establish full-process support capabilities covering product design and development, manufacturing, and post-deployment, and also sets various safety requirements for the dynamic driving task execution capability of intelligent driving systems.   

Meanwhile, the United Nations Global Technical Regulation for Automated Driving Systems (ADS GTR), jointly led by China, the European Union, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and Japan, has been officially approved and released. This regulation defines core technical indicators for automated driving system products, puts forward requirements at the manufacturer level and grouped audit and assessment methodologies, and builds a regulatory framework covering the full lifecycle of products. 

Both the world’s first global technical regulation for automated driving and China’s domestic mandatory national standard for L3/L4 automated driving mark that high-level intelligent driving has entered the stage of institutionalized commercial implementation.

At present, many automakers have launched L3/L4 intelligent driving systems, such as Huawei Qiankun ADS 5.0, Geely G-ASD H9, Chery Falcon 900, and BYD DiPilot Autonomous Driving Edition. Meanwhile, they embed high-level intelligent driving hardware in new models, such as high-channel LiDARs and high-compute chips, to meet higher requirements of L3/L4 high-level intelligent driving. Most solutions adopt high-compute chips of 700-2000 TOPS for embedded hardware, aiming to reserve space for software upgrades in the next 3-5 years.    

Horizon Robotics’ next-generation intelligent driving chip Journey7 (J7) series may adopt 3nm or 4nm process and achieve mass production in 2027. Wherein, the top-spec version J7P targets computing power far exceeding NVIDIA Thor-X. The C7H co-developed with Volkswagen also adopts the Riemann architecture, and is developed based on J7, using 3-4nm process, with single-chip AI computing power of 500-700TOPS. It supports full-scenario / L3-L4 autonomous driving under complex urban road conditions.

Geely G-ASD H9 is equipped with dual NVIDIA DRIVE Thor-U chips. The two chips implement underlying mutual redundancy, delivering total computing power of over 1400TOPS. It has been deployed on flagship models above RMB350,000 including Zeekr 9X, Zeekr 8X and Zeekr009. It supports full-redundancy L3 architecture, full-scenario D2D, map-free campus roaming, and one-click summon for valet parking.

Moreover, OEMs’ chip self-development teams also keep expanding. Li Auto Mach100, Xpeng Turing AI Chip and others have been installed and mass-produced. Xiaomi XRING D100 and BYD Xuanji A3 have made a debut. Volkswagen develops the C7H chip with Horizon Robotics.

Li Auto Mach100 is an SoC specially designed to support automotive AD software stacks. In automotive applications, Mach 100 targets high-level NOA and capability reserve for future L3/L4. Single-chip effective computing power of Mach100 reaches 1280TOPS; dual-chip combination delivers effective computing power 5-6 times that of NVIDIA Thor-U. Mach100 is equipped with 8 LPDDR5X subsystems, providing 64GB RAM and peak bandwidth of 273GB/s. The MIPI-CSI system supports input from up to 11 cameras, and its image signal processor (ISP) subsystem processes raw images for perception models on the NPU. 

BYD’s self-developed 4nm intelligent driving chip, Xuanji A3, achieved mass production upon its launch. It supports L3 and L4 autonomous driving. Efficient coordination among three chips delivers total computing power of over 2100TOPS while balancing power consumption control and computing power utilization. It is planned to be deployed on new Denza models.

Xpeng Turing AI Chip delivers single-chip computing power up to 750TOPS. The brand-new L4 production vehicle Xpeng GX can carry up to four chips, achieving total automotive computing power of 3000TOPS - the highest level among current global production vehicles. Its technical route adopts the vision-based solution supplemented by radar. Decision latency of VLA2.0 end-to-end large model is lower than 80-milliseconds.  

Xiaomi’s self-developed high-compute AI chip for intelligent driving XRING 100 makes its debut. It is China’s first 3nm intelligent driving chip, featuring 20-core high-performance CPU and 16-core high-compute NPU. It supports up to 160GB RAM and local deployment of up to 200B parameter large models. It benchmarks NVIDIA Thor, NIO Shenji and Xpeng Turing.

Carizon (Volkswagen China’s intelligent driving subsidiary) has successfully developed an intelligent driving SoC with internal code name being C7H. It adopts 3-5nm process, and is built on Horizon Robotics’ 4th generation BPU Riemann architecture. Its computing power scales flexibly between 500TOPS and 700TOPS. It is specially optimized for multi-modal large models and is expected to find wide adaption in vehicles in 2028.  

In urban NOA competition, NVIDIA Thor-U gains momentum to replace the traditional Orin X solution, and numerous new products will be deployed on vehicles. 

SoCs selected for L2.9 intelligent driving systems (including embedded hardware) are mostly high-compute chips. In 2025, NVIDIA Orin-X was deployed on the largest number of vehicle models, followed by Tesla AI4.0 (for self-developed models) and Huawei HiSilicon Ascend series (for AITO, LUXEED, STELATO, MAEXTRO and SAIC (Shangjie) models). Since its mass production in 2024, NVIDIA Thor-U has sustained strong growth. From January to May 2026, its market share climbed to No.1, up to 27%. Besides, in 2026, intelligent driving SoCs including Qualcomm Snapdragon8797 (320TOPS), Xheart BMC 7 (272TOPS), SiEngine Xingchen No.1 (512TOPS) and Horizon Robotics J6P have been mounted on vehicles.   

Xingchen No.1 (AD1000), SiEngine’s full-scenario high-level autonomous driving chip, and Xingchen No.1 Lite (AD800), achieved mass production in December 025 and will be largely installed in vehicles in 2026. Meanwhile, Xingchen No.1 obtained the automotive chip cybersecurity product certification issued by CATARC Huacheng Certification in March 026. Xingchen No.1 fully benchmarks world’s leading intelligent driving products and outperforms mainstream international advanced products on key indicators including CPU performance, AI computing power, ISP processing capacity and NPU on-chip storage capacity. One AD1000 chip can enable L2++ ADAS functions; two chips realize L3 conditionally automated driving; four chips enable L4 automated driving. 

This chip adopts 7nm automotive grade process and complies with AEC-Q100 standard. Its multi-core heterogeneous architecture delivers robust intelligent driving computing power: CPU computing power reaches 250KDMIPS, and NPU computing power hits 512TOPS. Multi-chip coordination delivers maximum computing power up to 2048TOPS. In hardware configuration, AD1000 integrates high-performance VACC and ISP, bears ASIL-D functional safety island, and provides rich interfaces, fully meeting L2-L4 intelligent driving requirements. 

Furthermore, Xingchen No.1’s high-performance NPU architecture natively supports Transformer large model, fully adapting to the trend toward end-to-end large models for intelligent driving. Meanwhile, its high-compute DSP unit provides programmability for iteration of customer-defined operators.

Momenta joins hands with its chip partner Xheart to build advantages of hardware-software integration and collaboration. XHEART was formally founded in December 023. It assembled a nearly 100-person R&D team in 2024. In 2026, Xheart officially launched X7, its first intelligent driving SoC. Xheart built dedicated NPU architecture tailor-made for X7. Centering on BEV+Transformer, deep hardware customization of specially designed NPU is implemented for core operators such as attention mechanism and BEV spatial conversion. It supports large models with parameters roughly 10 times more than general-purpose chips. Just a single chip can meet full-scenario requirements of urban NOA functions, directly benchmarking against industrial benchmarks.
