TELECOMMUNICATIONS in Shanghai, which were interrupted for a short period on Monday afternoon, were restored yesterday, according to Shanghai Mobile, the city's biggest mobile carrier which warned local people to avoid unnecessary or over lengthy calls to Sichuan Province. Calls there would put extra pressure on already-damaged networks, the government telecommunications regulator and carriers said yesterday.

The number of long distance calls to Sichuan surged to 10 times the norm yesterday.
