The holding of the 2012 Olympic Games this summer in London may not be able to stir up replacement demand for LCD TVs due to a slow recovery of the global economy, especially in Europe, according to industry sources.

The last replacement demand for TVs happened in 2005-2006, and a new round of replacement demand is expected to take place this year, given that LCD TVs generally have a product life cycle of seven years, the sources noted.

However, due to the increasing popularity of hand-held mobile devices, coupled with a slow economic recovery, this upcoming replacement demand may not reach its peak in 2012, the sources commented.

Most TV makers have estimated that global shipments of LCD TVs will grow within a range of 10% to 216-217 million units in 2012. Among branded vendors, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are expected to ship 40 million and 30 million TVs, respectively, this year, the sources estimated.
