Kevin Pleines, an analyst with stock market research firm Birinyi Associates, reviewed 19 social media IPOs of 2011 and discovered that new social media stocks were mostly a bad investment, with 82.4 percent trading lower than their opening-day prices. As of Wednesday, only three stocks were trading above their opening-day price.

This may be less of a statement, however, about the social media sector than about IPOs in general. A Wall Street Journal analysis found that 2010 had fewer IPOs and the amount raised was 6 percent less. Two-thirds of companies are trading below their IPO price as of the last week of the year, but social media IPOs did a bit better in this regard. Pleines reports that going by the IPO price rather than the stocks opening day price, 11 of 19 social media stocks – or 57.9 percent  — were trading below that level.
