Automotive Display Research: Multi-Screen Application Slows Down, While OLED and MiniLED Are Introduced in Vehicles Quickly
In 2026, automotive displays will no longer excessively pursue the number and size of screens, but will shift towards improving the optical performance, energy efficiency, and visual experience of displays. According to ResearchInChina, passenger cars carried 46.314 million displays in China in 2025, a year-on-year increase of 1.3%, compared with 8.5% in 2024, indicating a slowdown in multi-screen application in cockpits.
1. Multiple flagship vehicle models adopt OLED and MiniLED displays to improve automotive display quality
In April 2026, NIO ES9 was launched, with the cockpit using Mini LED and OLED displays only, including:
15.6-inch AMOLED CID
Utilizing the Tandem OLED architecture, brightness is doubled compared to traditional single-layer OLED. It also incorporates the latest Demura and DBI software algorithms, further enhancing brightness while maintaining advantages such as long service life (LT80@25℃ up to 15000h) and low power consumption.
Feature 3K resolution, 860nit brightness, 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, 100% DCI-P3 color gamut coverage, and 10-bit color depth, and also offer HDR Vivid and Dolby Vision.
48-inch SkyLine Screen
Mini LED screen with 1,610 color zones, 5K resolution, 1200nit brightness, and 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio; the application of QD film greatly improves the screen's color gamut coverage, achieving 100% DCI-P3 color gamut coverage and 10-bit color depth.
NOMI MATE 3.0 Display
The world's first automotive-grade flexible AMOLED full-circle screen is used.
2*16-inch NIO Link Second-Row Entertainment Screen
The screen resolution is 3.3K; Tandem OLED technology enables a full-screen brightness of 889 nits, which can adaptively adjust according to ambient light; the contrast ratio is 2,000,000:1, the DCI-P3 color gamut coverage is 100%, and the color depth is 10-bit.
The screen has a built-in 8MP high-definition camera that supports dynamic face focusing, intelligent face fill light, and other functions.
The screen angle adjusts with seat movement, offering a 65° rotation angle to maintain the optimal eye-level viewing angle.
HDR Vivid and Dolby Vision.
8-inch Second-Row Center Armrest Console Screen
Located in the second-row executive center armrest console, this liftable 8-inch AMOLED central control screen also utilizes Tandem OLED technology.
The screen brightness is 889 nits, the contrast ratio is 1,600,000:1, and the DCI-P3 color gamut reaches 100%.
The screen supports 0° and 35° VOGE ultra-quiet angle adjustment, allowing rear passengers to freely adjust the viewing angle according to their posture and lighting conditions.
2. Commercialization of Micro LED technology is accelerating, with HUDs and transparent displays being the main application scenarios.
In 2026, multiple automotive display companies have launched display products based on Micro LED, accelerating the commercialization of Micro LED technology. HUDs and transparent displays are the main application scenarios.
BOE: Panoramic Micro LED HUD
BOE brought the "HERO 2.0 Smart Cockpit" at CES 2026. It unveiled for the first time a panoramic Micro LED HUD with a brightness of up to 50,000 nits, which can still be clearly viewed even in strong light environments; a 115% NTSC ultra-wide color gamut, a 0.2mm ultra-fine pixel size and an ultra-wide viewing angle offer rich and delicate excellent image quality performance; with integrated AI voice and gesture recognition systems, the command recognition rate reaches 98%.
Innolux: Ultra-high-brightness Micro LED HUD
Innolux has launched a HUD product with a direct display brightness of 50,000 nits and a reflected virtual image brightness of 10,000 nits, specially designed for high-light environments such as automotive and navigation. The ultra-high brightness design can effectively handle image reflection and blur in strong light environments, and can still clearly project navigation information even under strong sunlight.
Tianma Microelectronics: Automotive High-brightness Micro LED Display
In February 2026, Tianma's new 12-inch Micro LED high-brightness automotive display was successfully lit. The Micro LED self-luminous display is fully adapted to the automotive panoramic HUD system. Tianma’s 12-inch Micro LED high-brightness automotive display has a brightness of more than 50,000nits, a contrast ratio of up to 1,000,000:1, and a color gamut coverage of 110% NTSC.
At the technical level, this Micro LED display uses a new TFT backplane driver design, optimized LED pixel structure and packaging solution, combined with efficient laser transfer and intelligent replenishment and repair processes to effectively improve luminous efficiency and achieve high-brightness display while reasonably controlling power consumption and heat generation. This technical path helps to solve problems such insufficient brightness, slow response and volume restriction of traditional displays in automotive scenarios such as HUDs.
In addition to HUD, transparent display is also the main application field of Micro LED. At CES 2026, AUO showed its transparent Micro LED display fitted with Aero Module, which features high transparency and high brightness, supports splicing and dynamic deployment, and can be applied to automotive windows and other locations to display information while maintaining transparency.
With its unique advantages like ultra-high brightness, transparent display and splicability, Micro LED is at the critical point between concept verification and commercial application. The automotive field will become one of the earliest large-scale application scenarios for Micro LED.
3. Cockpit displays evolve from “hard screens” to “flexible deformable screens”
Automotive displays have fully evolved from traditional rectangular hard screens to flexible and deformable forms such as sliding, curling, pulling, and C-shaped curved surfaces. In early 2026, multiple companies offered their flexible display solutions, providing new form options for autonomous displays.
TCL CSOT: Sliding-type CID and curved armrest printed OLED automotive display
TCL CSOT has launched its first sliding roll-up CID and curved armrest printed OLED automotive display. The sliding roll-up CID can be extended from 16 inches to 28 inches, covering the center console and front passenger areas. The sliding roll structure of the curved armrest display has a curl radius of less than 4 mm and has undergone more than 100,000 durability tests. Combined with the design of the gradient curved armrest box, it optimizes interaction while taking into account visual beauty.
LG Display: 33-inch flexible rollable OLED automotive panel
LG Display has unveiled a 33-inch flexible rollable OLED automotive panel, inspired by the concept of rollable screens. Part of the display area can be rolled up with a curvature radius of approximately 3 centimeters, allowing for flexible adjustment of the display area according to the scenario. This maintains a clean interface while driving and expands into a full-size screen when parked or in autonomous driving mode.
Visionox: Flexible AMOLED Dual-Panel Dynamic Bending Automotive Display Solution
Visionox, in collaboration with Corning, has presented a "flexible AMOLED dynamic bending automotive display solution," employing two 14.2-inch flexible screens that support bending and unfolding, with a bezel of only 3.8 millimeters at the joint.
