Maoming Petrochemical, Sinopec's major refining unit in southeastern Guangdong Province, saw its 2.6-mln-ton diesel hydrogenation facility come on stream on August 13, said a company official.

"Now our annual diesel generation capacity exceeds 5 mln tons, reaching around 6.6 mln tons," Cai Zhan, in charge of public relations at Maoming Petrochemical, told Interfax on Aug 14. Maoming's diesel capacity remains the second biggest in the country after the Sinopec Zhenhai Refining and Chemical Corporation (ZRCC).

ZRCC was China's biggest refinery until it was overtaken by PetroChina Dalian Petrochemical in March, said Cai. Actual diesel output will stand below capacity as its crude processin facilities have already reached their higher limit, said Cai.

The diesel hydrogenation facility, as a part of the company's product upgrade program, was launched last July, involving an investment of RMB 360 mln (USD 45 mln).The refining unit  completed the expansion of its ethylene unit early this month and its new 1-mln-ton per year capacity is the largest in the country.
